The Arab League announced it will hold an emergency meeting on tomorrow Sunday at the level of permanent representatives to address Israel’s recognition of the breakaway region of Somaliland as an independent state.
The General Secretariat of the League of Arab States Ahmed Aboul Gheit confirmed Saturday that the session, requested by Somalia and backed by member states, aims to formulate a unified response to the move, which the League described as a "provocative" threat to regional stability.
Somalia’s Ambassador to the Arab League, Ali Abdi Awari, stated the meeting would discuss the repercussions of Israel’s "irresponsible decision" and reaffirm the League’s commitment to Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. He emphasized that Somaliland remains an inseparable part of Somalia under international law.
The urgent gathering follows Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s announcement on Dec. 26. The League has warned that such unilateral actions violate the UN Charter and could destabilize the strategic Horn of Africa region.
