The Arab League, meeting in an emergency session at the level of permanent representatives, strongly condemned Israel’s recognition of the so-called “Somaliland” region, rejecting any measures stemming from what it described as a null and void decision.
In a statement issued after the meeting, the League warned against using the move to facilitate plans for the forced displacement of the Palestinian people or to allow the exploitation of northern Somali ports for establishing foreign military bases.
The League reaffirmed its longstanding position that the northwestern region of Somalia, known as “Somaliland,” is an integral part of the Federal Republic of Somalia, citing the Arab League Charter, the U.N. Charter and international law. It rejected any direct or indirect attempt to recognize its secession.
The council urged Arab ambassadors worldwide to brief host governments and international organizations on the risks of the move and called for coordinated Arab-African action to safeguard regional security.
