The League of Arab States, in partnership with the United Nations Population Fund, hosted a side event Thursday on the margins of the 59th session of the United Nations Commission on Population and Development focusing on demographic change and sustainable development.
The meeting, titled “Demographic Transformations, the Digital Future and Sustainable Development: Achieving the Longevity Dividend,” was co-chaired by Saudi Arabia and Egypt at the United Nations headquarters in New York.
Officials highlighted the growing importance of policies addressing population aging, digital transformation and lifelong investment in education and health. Speakers stressed that while the Arab region remains relatively young, gradual demographic shifts toward aging populations present both challenges and opportunities for economic growth and social stability.
Participants also shared national experiences, including Japan’s policies on aging, and called for stronger international cooperation to ensure healthy and active aging.
