Arab League Assistant Secretary-General and Head of the Palestine and Occupied Arab Territories Sector, Ambassador Dr. Faed Mustafa, met with Roland Friedrich, acting director of UNRWA’s Cairo office, to discuss the agency’s growing operational and financial challenges.
Friedrich outlined serious obstacles facing UNRWA, particularly in the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip, citing continued targeting of the agency by Israeli authorities, including the recent destruction of its main headquarters in Sheikh Jarrah, East Jerusalem. Despite the difficulties, he said UNRWA remains committed to maintaining services across Palestinian territories.
He also warned that a $200 million budget deficit is limiting the agency’s ability to deliver essential assistance and urged countries to support UNRWA’s 2026 emergency appeal.
Mustafa reaffirmed the Arab League’s backing for UNRWA as a cornerstone of international responsibility toward Palestinian refugees pending a just and lasting solution under international legitimacy and the Arab Peace Initiative.
