Arab foreign ministers on Monday expressed their appreciation to Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit as his tenure comes to an end, while approving the appointment of veteran Egyptian diplomat Nabil Fahmy as the organization’s next secretary-general.
During a ministerial meeting in the Jordanian capital, Amman, the Arab League Council praised Aboul Gheit’s leadership over the past decade, commending his efforts to advance joint Arab action during a period marked by major regional and international challenges.
The council said Aboul Gheit played a key role in defending Arab causes, particularly the Palestinian issue, and in preserving the Arab League’s position as the principal framework for Arab coordination and cooperation.
Ministers approved Fahmy’s appointment for a five-year term beginning July 1, expressing confidence in his diplomatic experience and his ability to strengthen Arab cooperation and address challenges facing the region.
