The League of Arab States commemorated the Arab Day for Palestinian and Arab Prisoners on Thursday, renewing calls for international action to address the conditions of detainees held in Israeli prisons.
In a statement issued by its Palestine and Occupied Arab Territories Sector, the organization said the annual observance on April 17, adopted during the 2008 Arab Summit in Damascus, highlights what it described as serious humanitarian violations against prisoners in detention.
The league condemned alleged assaults against prominent Palestinian prisoner Marwan Barghouti and called for immediate medical care and protection for detainees. It also expressed concern over the death of former prisoner Riyad Al-Amour, who died in Cairo earlier this month following what officials said were years of medical neglect.
The organization urged international bodies, including the International Committee of the Red Cross and the United Nations, to intervene to ensure detainees’ safety and press for their release in accordance with international law.
