The Arab League’s General Secretariat marked International Migrants Day on Dec. 18 by highlighting migrants’ contributions to host societies and urging stronger international cooperation to ensure safe, orderly and regular migration.
In a statement, the secretariat said economic, political and environmental pressures are driving people to seek better opportunities abroad, noting that many migrants excel in science, work and culture, while others remain vulnerable and in need of protection and integration support. It called for maximizing the benefits of migration while addressing risks faced by countries of origin, transit and destination.
The Arab League warned that restrictive measures adopted by some major countries to block migrants could have serious global repercussions, describing migration as a longstanding human phenomenon that has shaped history.
The statement urged Arab states to participate in the International Migration Review Forum in May 2026 and reaffirmed commitment to the U.N. Global Compact for Migration and the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda.
