The League of Arab States expressed deep concern over continued Israeli measures to close the Al-Aqsa Mosque to Muslim worshippers, particularly during the holy month of Ramadan.
In a statement issued by its Sector for Palestine and the Occupied Arab Territories, the Arab League said the closure of the mosque and the Al-Haram al-Sharif constitutes a violation of freedom of worship and undermines the longstanding historical and legal status of holy sites in Jerusalem.
The organization warned that restrictions on access to the mosque, which holds profound religious and historical significance for Muslims worldwide, risk escalating tensions and undermining efforts aimed at maintaining calm and stability.
The statement called for respect for the status quo governing Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem and urged adherence to international law and relevant United Nations resolutions, including 252 (1968), 267 (1969), and 476 (1980).
It also urged the immediate reopening of Al-Aqsa Mosque to worshippers and expressed concern over restrictions affecting the Ibrahimi Mosque in the city of Hebron, calling on the international community to act to protect holy sites and safeguard freedom of worship.
