Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit has issued a fierce condemnation regarding a recent visit to occupied Jerusalem by the leadership of Somalia's northwestern region, commonly known as Somaliland. During the controversial visit, regional authorities inaugurated a building designated as an "embassy," a move the Arab League has forcefully rejected.
Aboul Gheit declared the diplomatic step entirely null, void, and devoid of any legal merit or international consequence. He characterized the diplomatic mission as a desperate bid to undermine the territorial integrity, unity, and national sovereignty of the Federal Republic of Somalia, directly breaching the United Nations Charter and foundational tenets of international law.
The regional bloc head emphasized that the provocative gesture deeply insults the Somali population, the broader Arab world, and both African and Islamic communities, particularly given the ongoing actions executed by Israeli occupation authorities against the Palestinian populace.
A Warning Against Exploitation and Foreign Agendas
The Arab League chief strongly cautioned Somaliland's regional officials against tying the future and welfare of their local population to external political arrangements. He asserted that these diplomatic maneuvering protocols exclusively benefit foreign agendas rather than serving the authentic needs of the Somali people.
Aboul Gheit warned that the Israeli occupation's regional strategy relies primarily on exploiting internal domestic rifts and deepening fractures among regional neighbors to expand its own military and political footprint while systematically destabilizing the broader region.
He further urged the breakaway region's leadership to preserve their shared national Somali identity. He extended a formal call for regional leaders to step forward with state-level responsibility and participate in direct, constructive dialogue with the federal components of the Somali state, leaning on deep-rooted historical, social, tribal, and religious ties to fulfill the public's aspirations for long-term peace and stability.
Threat to Arab National Security and Maritime Stability
Gamal Roshdy, the official spokesperson for the Arab League Secretary-General, reiterated the organization’s unyielding solidarity with the Federal Republic of Somalia and its unwavering commitment to protecting the nation's independence and internationally recognized borders.
Roshdy recalled a critical emergency session held by the Arab League Council on December 28, 2025. During that summit, the council formally designated unilateral political alignments involving Israel and Somalia's northwestern territory as an explicit threat to Arab national security. Furthermore, the council warned that such actions pose a severe risk to maritime safety, peace, and geopolitical stability across the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden, and the Horn of Africa.
The spokesperson concluded by stating that the Secretary-General is actively sustaining diplomatic operations to mobilize a unified Arab, African, and international front to block these unsanctioned foreign incursions and preserve regional stability.
