Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the Arab League (AL), strongly condemned the killing of Palestinian journalist Shireen Abu Aqleh by Israeli soldiers in the northern West Bank city of Jenin.
In a statement, Aboul Gheit stressed that Abu Aqleh’s assassination is a “heinous crime” against the press and media freedom that should not be allowed to pass unnoticed and requires a comprehensive investigation.
He also expressed his condolences to the family of the deceased, Palestinian, and the whole Arab press, wishing a speedy recovery to journalist Ali Al-Samoudi, who was injured along with the deceased.
Moreover, Aboul Gheit stressed that the crime is not surprising as the Israeli occupation always disregards any standards of respect for human rights and seeks to silence the Palestinian voice. He also holds the Israeli government responsible for this tragic crime, stressing the need to punish its sinful perpetrators.
Aboul Gheit noted that the name of Abu Aqleh will be added to the list of pride and sadness for the Arab media martyrs, who died in defense of the truth, and to convey the Palestinian voice and the crimes of the Israeli occupation to the whole world.
