The Arab League has strongly condemned Israel’s unilateral recognition of the self-declared region known as “Somaliland,” describing the move as a flagrant violation of international law and the United Nations Charter.
In a statement issued after a council meeting, the Arab League said Israel’s declaration was “null and void” and constituted a serious breach of the sovereignty of the Federal Republic of Somalia.
The council warned that the step could have dangerous repercussions for peace and security in the Horn of Africa, the Red Sea region and international stability.
The Arab League also rejected any attempts to establish military bases in the territory, calling them a “red line” and an attack on national sovereignty. It reaffirmed full support for Somalia’s unity, territorial integrity and sovereignty over all its land.
The council further denounced recognition of the independence of parts of sovereign states as a dangerous precedent and firmly rejected linking the move to any plans to displace Palestinians from their land.
