Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit strongly condemned remarks by Israel’s Justice Minister calling for the annexation of the occupied West Bank, describing them as “dangerous and irresponsible.”
In a statement, Aboul Gheit said the statements made by a senior Israeli official reflect alarming intentions that the Arab League is closely monitoring.
“These comments demonstrate Israel’s deep entrenchment in illusions of power that dismiss international law and ethical norms,” Aboul Gheit said, warning that “this path of arrogance will only lead to an endless cycle of violence.”
He emphasized that annexing the West Bank is a long-standing objective of Israel’s far-right, and called on the international community to take a firm stand against such policies. “This is a reckless and provocative strategy that threatens to ignite the situation across the region,” he said.
Aboul Gheit reaffirmed that the West Bank is internationally recognized as occupied Palestinian territory, based on international law and United Nations resolutions. “Speaking of annexation is nothing more than political thuggery and a blatant assault on all international norms and values,” he added.
