The Arab League’s secretary-general, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, strongly condemned a drone attack that targeted a United Nations base in South Kordofan state, Sudan, killing six peacekeepers and wounding eight others from the Bangladeshi brigade, the League said.
The attack struck the Kadugli logistical base of the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA), according to a statement issued by the League’s press office.
Aboul Gheit extended condolences to the government and people of Bangladesh and to the families of the victims, wishing a speedy recovery to the wounded. He praised the role of U.N. missions operating under what he described as extremely dangerous conditions.
He said targeting U.N. forces constitutes a grave violation of international humanitarian law and amounts to a war crime, calling for accountability for those responsible.
The Arab League renewed its call for an immediate cessation of hostilities in Sudan and the resumption of an inclusive, Sudanese-led political process toward a permanent ceasefire.
