The head of the Arab League condemned a deadly attack on a mosque in Sudan’s El Fasher that killed dozens of civilian worshippers, calling for an immediate cease-fire and humanitarian access to the besieged city.

Ahmed Aboul Gheit, the secretary-general of the Cairo-based League of Arab States, denounced Friday’s assault and renewed appeals for lifting the 18-month-long siege of El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur.

League spokesman Gamal Roshdy said Aboul Gheit urged adherence to U.N. Security Council Resolution 2736, passed in 2024, demanding an end to hostilities, protection of civilians, and unimpeded humanitarian relief.

The Arab League said it is holding intensive consultations with the United Nations and the African Union to revive Sudanese-led peace talks in Addis Ababa and secure a humanitarian truce and cease-fire.

El Fasher has been the focal point of Sudan’s brutal conflict between the military and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, which has plunged the country into one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises
