The Arab League on Wednesday condemned statements attributed to the “Board of Peace” calling for the removal of the U.N. Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) from what it described as a “new Gaza,” saying the remarks directly undermine the legal and historical rights of Palestinian refugees.

In a statement, the League’s General Secretariat for Palestine and Occupied Arab Territories said UNRWA was established under U.N. General Assembly Resolution 302 (1949) and that its mandate cannot be terminated as long as the Palestinian refugee issue remains unresolved.

The League stressed that UNRWA remains indispensable in providing humanitarian relief, education, health care and protection to millions of Palestinian refugees, particularly in Gaza, where it described the humanitarian crisis as unprecedented. It urged the international community to safeguard the agency and reject efforts to weaken or eliminate its mandate.
