Apple has announced that Tim Cook will step down as Chief Executive Officer in September, ending more than a decade at the helm of the technology giant.

Cook will be succeeded by long-time Apple executive John Ternus, currently Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering, marking the company’s first leadership transition since the death of founder Steve Jobs.

Cook is expected to remain with Apple as Executive Chairman following the handover.

In a statement, Ternus said he had spent most of his career at Apple and was fortunate to have worked under Steve Jobs and been mentored by Cook.

He added that helping shape Apple’s products had been a privilege, particularly those that have transformed how people interact with technology and each other.

Ternus joined Apple’s product design team in 2001 and became Vice President of Hardware Engineering in 2013. He was later promoted to Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering in 2021, reporting directly to Tim Cook.

He has played a central role in Apple’s recent hardware strategy, helping drive growth in Mac sales and overseeing development across major product lines including the iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, and AirPods.

Ternus also presented the iPhone Air, widely seen as Apple’s most significant iPhone redesign since 2017. He will join Apple’s board of directors on 1 September.

The leadership change comes as Apple faces increasing pressure to maintain its competitive edge in artificial intelligence, an area where rivals are investing heavily.

Cook said leading Apple had been the greatest privilege of his life, signaling a carefully managed transition rather than a sudden departure.

In a separate leadership update, Johny Srouji, who has overseen Apple’s custom silicon and sensor technology, has been appointed Chief Hardware Officer, reflecting further internal restructuring within the company’s engineering leadership.
