António José Seguro won Portugal’s presidential election on Sunday after securing a decisive victory in the second round of voting, defeating his rival André Ventura, according to preliminary official results.
With 95 percent of polling stations counted, Seguro received 66 percent of the vote, compared to 34 percent for Ventura, confirming a clear mandate from Portuguese voters.
Seguro is set to assume office in March, succeeding President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, who is completing his second and final term in accordance with the constitution.
The election marked a significant political moment in Portugal, with high voter turnout and a closely watched campaign leading into the runoff.
Seguro’s victory is expected to shape the country’s political landscape in the coming years as he prepares to take on the largely ceremonial but influential role of head of state.
