Anger swept social media in India and abroad, after the spokesperson of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) insulted the Prophet Muhammad.
The Indian official posted on his Twitter account a controversial tweet about the Prophet Muhammad's marriage to Aisha, which sparked anger and widespread criticism among the pioneers of social networking sites, especially in Arab countries.
Activists criticized the escalation of hatred against Islam and Muslims in India, stressing Prime Minister Narendra Modi's racist policy against Muslims.
The hashtag topped the social media platforms, as many rejected the apparent attack on the Prophet Muhammad.
The International Organization for Supporting the Prophet of Islam said in a tweet on its Twitter account, "The spokesman for the ruling party in India, Bharatiya Janata, insults the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace."
Anger spread through social media after the Indian official's tweet and reached the point of calling for a boycott of goods coming from India.
Thirty-six people have so far been arrested in connection with the violence that erupted in Uttar Pradesh's Kanpur on Friday over alleged insulting remarks on Prophet Muhammad by a BJP spokesperson, police said yesterday.
