Dutch airline KLM halted all flights from the European destinations to Schiphol for Saturday night, the airline announced.

"To ensure safe and workable operations at Schiphol for passengers and crew, KLM took the far-reaching

a decision that no further passengers would be brought to Amsterdam," KLM said on Saturday.

"This decision was taken to ensure that as many stranded passengers as possible can depart from Schiphol on Saturday and that KLM can operate as many flights as possible on Sunday."

The number of passengers who were unable to depart from Amsterdam surged sharply during the day when

several flights were delayed or cancelled yesterday.

In response, KLM pointed out that more and more aircraft could not land or take off in Amsterdam due to unforeseen circumstances, such as "unfavourable weather conditions and runway maintenance at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol."

"KLM offers its sincere apologies to passengers who were unable to travel to Amsterdam from certain European destinations, as well as those who were unable to transfer via Amsterdam to other final destinations," the Dutch airline added.

Last February, KLM suspended its flights to Ukraine until further notice as Russia is preparing to invade the eastern European country.

“The next flight to the capital Kyiv is scheduled for tonight, but will not be operated,” the Netherlands’ main airline said in a statement.

The decision followed “changes to travel advice… and a comprehensive security analysis,” it added. “There will be no flights in Ukrainian airspace until further notice.”

The Netherlands joined several European nations including Belgium, Germany and Italy in calling for its citizens to leave Ukraine and advising against travel to the country.
