Amid Ethiopia-Tigray Clashes, 9 Egyptians Evacuated

The Egyptian embassy in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, succeeded in evacuating 9 Egyptians from the city of Mekeli, the capital of the Ethiopian Tigray region on Wednesday.

Tigray region is currently witnessing a conflict between federal forces and the forces of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Tigray.

The Egyptians are expected to return back to the homeland on Wednesday evening on the EgyptAir flight. They work in a private company that collects devices, cardboard products and paper products, according to Akhbar Alyoum newspaper.

Amid Ethiopia-Tigray Clashes, 9 Egyptians Evacuated

Local reports added that the evacuated civilians are part of a convoy consisting of 400 people of multiple nationalities that will be evacuated.

Osama Abdel Khaleq, Egypt's ambassador to Ethiopia and the African Union, confirmed that when the embassy learned that there were Egyptians stranded in Mekeli, direct contact was made with the International Red Cross to establish contacts with them.

“The embassy received a message from the Red Cross that they are in contact with the Egyptians,” he added.

The Egyptian ambassador noted that the embassy was in constant contact with the Egyptians to follow up their daily conditions, and with regard to the evacuation process.
