An American journalist working for an Italian foreign news agency was kidnapped in central Baghdad on Tuesday evening, prompting Iraqi security forces to launch an immediate pursuit of the perpetrators.

The journalist was known among media circles in the Iraqi capital and had routinely moved around the city without prior security concerns. There had been no indications suggesting she might be targeted.

The abduction reportedly took place between 7:30 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. local time in a central district of the city. Eyewitness accounts indicated that unidentified assailants had been tracking the journalist’s movements before forcibly seizing her and pushing her into a vehicle carrying four individuals.

Security sources said authorities were quickly alerted and initiated a chase of the suspects. During the pursuit, the vehicle used in the kidnapping overturned. However, the kidnappers managed to transfer the journalist to a second car that had been monitoring the operation from a distance, enabling them to escape once again.

According to preliminary findings, the driver of the first vehicle was apprehended at the scene after failing to flee following the incident. Iraqi security forces have begun interrogating the suspect in an effort to uncover the identities of the rest of group and determine the circumstances surrounding the kidnapping.

The incident has raised fresh concerns about the safety of journalists operating in Iraq, particularly foreign correspondents, despite recent improvements in the overall security situation.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the abduction, and authorities have not released the identity of the kidnapped journalist. Investigations remain ongoing.
