Arab League Assistant Secretary-General Ambassador Hossam Zaki on Sunday sharply criticized Israel, saying it “does not respect international law or international legitimacy,” following reports of Israeli recognition of Somaliland.
In media remarks, Zaki said Israel has a history of siding with “illegality” and described the move as an assault on the sovereignty of an Arab and African state, warning it could destabilize security in the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea region.
He urged Arab and African countries to act swiftly to block the recognition and prevent further steps. Zaki said the Arab League convened an emergency meeting of permanent representatives on Sunday, with the African Union set to hold talks on Monday to assess the implications.
He added it could not be ruled out that Israel might seek to use Somaliland as part of future plans related to Palestinian displacement, calling such scenarios a violation of international frameworks, including the U.S. peace plan for Gaza.
