Nearly 300 flights to Berlin were cancelled on Wednesday due to a labor strike, which is the first time since 2018 a labor strike led to so many flight cancellations.

The flights, which were scheduled to take off and land at the Berlin Brandenburg airport, have either been cancelled or rescheduled due to a labor strike.

The terminal buildings of Berlin's international airport were virtually empty this morning.

Several workers gathered in front of the main terminal building of the Berlin-Brandenburg airport. The strike is set to last throughout the day.

Only occasional passengers who had not heard about the strike arrived at the airport.

The trade union is demanding a monthly surge of €500 ($540) in the salaries of airport employees and the ground handling services over a 12-month collective bargaining contract.

Lufthansa chief Carsten Spohr criticized the strike, noting "To call a one-day strike a warning strike is already unusual."

Meanwhile, the union expects as many as 1,500 workers to participate in the strike.
