The redevelopment of Alexandria’s historic Nabi Daniel Street has emerged as one of the city’s most significant urban heritage projects, combining architectural preservation with cultural revitalization and paving the way for new public arts initiatives, including the recently launched “Street of Art” program.

Located in the heart of downtown Alexandria, Nabi Daniel Street is widely regarded as one of the city’s most iconic cultural landmarks. The historic thoroughfare is home to heritage buildings, religious sites, and the renowned secondhand book market that has long served as a gathering place for intellectuals, writers and researchers.

The redevelopment project included infrastructure upgrades, restoration of building facades, improvements to pedestrian pathways, modernization of public lighting and the introduction of a unified visual identity for commercial storefronts. Officials said the goal was to preserve the street’s historical character while adapting it to contemporary urban needs.

Eng. Ayman Attia, Governor of Alexandria, said the project forms part of a broader strategy to preserve the city’s architectural heritage and enhance the quality of life in historic districts.

“Nabi Daniel Street represents an important part of Alexandria’s identity and cultural memory,” Attia said. “The redevelopment aims not only to improve the urban environment but also to strengthen the street’s role as a cultural and tourist destination.”

The project’s chief consultant, Dr. Ziad El-Sayyad, professor of architecture and urban design at Alexandria University’s Faculty of Engineering and director of the university’s Engineering Center, said planners sought to strike a balance between conservation and modernization.

“The redevelopment was designed to respect the historical and architectural value of the street while creating a vibrant public space that encourages cultural activities and community engagement,” El-Sayyad said.

Urban planners and cultural officials view the project as closely linked to the success of Alexandria’s “Street of Art” initiative, which has transformed sections of Nabi Daniel Street into an open-air venue for music performances, folk arts shows, children’s workshops and cultural activities.

The improved pedestrian environment and upgraded public spaces have enabled the street to host large-scale cultural events, attracting residents and visitors while reinforcing Alexandria’s reputation as one of the Mediterranean region’s leading cultural centers.

Observers say the project reflects a growing trend in heritage-city management, where urban redevelopment extends beyond physical restoration to revive the social and cultural functions of historic districts.

By integrating heritage preservation with public cultural programming, Nabi Daniel Street has become a model for how historic urban spaces can be reimagined as living cultural destinations. The project has restored the street’s traditional role as a meeting place for artists, writers and book lovers while creating new opportunities for community participation in cultural life.

The redevelopment’s impact became particularly evident during the “Street of Art” events, where residents gathered along the historic avenue to enjoy live performances and artistic activities, demonstrating how investment in public spaces can help reconnect communities with their cultural heritage.
