The President of the Arab Parliament (AP) Hon. Mr. Adel Bin AbdulRahman ALASOOMI, in his speech today in the opening session of the Parliamentary Dialogue Forum with Senates of Latin America and the Caribbean, stressed the necessity to strengthen the principles of solidarity, partnership, and mutual benefit between the Arab world, Africa, and the Latin American and Caribbean Region.

He explained that AP faces many common concerns and challenges that threaten the security and stability of our States, and undermine their development efforts, of which, the fight against poverty and unemployment, the requirements for achieving sustainable development, the development of education, the health system, and the empowerment of women and youth.

Alasoomi underlined the need to address these daunting challenges, which requires AP to robustly pursue to develop and strengthen mechanisms for Afro-Latin-Arab parliamentary cooperation at all levels, with a view to achieving a concrete role in the fields of economic, social and cultural development, as well as to achieving an active and positive participation in the promotion of acquaintance and tolerance among civilizations and cultures.

He added that despite the similarity of social, economic and development models among the Arab, African and Latin American and Caribbean States, the pace of existing cooperation has not yet reached the level of partnership hoped for by all our peoples.

Alasoomi reiterated the initiative of the AP, submitted to the Inter-Parliamentary Union, to establish a permanent coordination mechanism among the Heads of Regional Parliaments, through a forum under the name of: "International Forum of Regional Parliaments", where an annual meeting is held between Heads of Regional Parliaments, to coordinate positions and reach common understandings on issues that require ongoing dialogue.

In addition, he noted the AP’s initiative adopted by the First Global Parliamentary Summit on Counter-Terrorism, on Countering Terrorism in the Sahel Region of Africa, under the name « the Call for the Sahel », led by the AP in partnership with the Inter-Parliamentary Union, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean and the Inter-Parliamentary Committee of the G5 Sahel ; that proceeds from the fundamental notion that there should be a comprehensive approach to addressing the veritable causes of the growing threat of terrorism in this vital region.

Parliamentary Dialogue Forum with Senates of Latin America and the Caribbean is organized by the Association of Senate, Shoora, and Equivalent Councils in Africa and the Arab World, held in Morocco.
