Disney is working on developing an original sequel to its live-action remake of “Aladdin”, which premiered in May 2019, according to multiple reports.
Variety cited sources who said that the movie is in early development, revealing that the producers had spent the last six months contemplating which path they should take with the upcoming movie.
This comes after the tremendous success the live-action remake's had achieved, which had grossed $1 billion revenues worldwide, becoming the ninth-highest-grossing film of 2019, and the 34th highest-grossing film of all-time during its theatrical run.
It was also listed as the fourth live-action adaptation to cross the billion-dollar global box office milestone following, “The Lion King,” “Beauty and the Beast” and “Alice in Wonderland.”
The remake was based on Disney's 1992 animated movie, which itself is based on the eponymous tale from One Thousand and One Nights.
It featured Naomi Scott, Will Smith, Mena Massoud, Billy Magnussen, Alan Tudyk, Nasim Pedrad, Marwan Kenzari, Numan Acar, Frank Welker, Navid Negahban, Navid Negahban, Ocean Navarro, Kamil Lemieszewski, Sophie Carmen-Jones, and Adam Collins.
The live-action adaptation was directed by Guy Ritchie, who co-wrote its screenplay with John August.
The plot revolved around the poor market boy who, with a little help from a genie in a lamp, marries Princess Jasmine.
Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich, who produced the original, will be back to produce the movie, with Ryan Halprin as its executive producer.
Sadly, it is unknown at this time whether Ritchie will return to direct the movie, nor do we know whether Smith, Massoud, and Scott, would be coming back to reprise their roles in the upcoming movie, however, the producers are hopeful.
Aladdin 2 will have a theatrical release, and will not be a Disney Plus title.
The original movie had two sequels, however, sources say that this new take will be completely original and not based on those ideas.
