At least 15 Somali soldiers were killed in an attack by the extremist Al-Shabaab movement Monday on an army base in the Mudug region of central Somalia, according to local media.

The Somali Guardian newspaper reported that heavily armed fighters attacked at dawn today a base in the town of Baadwayne, where members of the 21st Division of the Somali Army are stationed. They killed at least 15 soldiers and seized army vehicles and other equipment.

According to the newspaper, the terrorists were very many and well-armed. The forces stationed in the area were not prepared to repel an attack of this kind.

Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack, affirming its control over the base in Baadwayne. They sized vehicles and military equipment in the army base, including automatic 23 mm anti-air cannons.

Earlier this month, the Somali National Army killed 19 militants of ‘Al-Shabaab’, a terrorist movement, and burned two vehicles carrying them in the southern Bay province.

The Somali Armed Forces supported by South West state security forces carried out a vital operation targeting ‘Al-Shabaab’ bases in the region.

The operation that took place in villages near the southwestern Somalia town of Dinsor, is basing on information from the people about their gathering in the area, according to the statement.
