Egyptian outfit Al Masry have exited the CAF Confederation Cup from the quarter-finals following an aggregate defeat to Moroccan side RS Berkane.

Having finished as group C runner-ups to TP Mazembe, Al Masry were drawn against Group D winners and 2020 champions RS Berkane in the quarter-finals.

Despite going down to nine men in Alexandria, Moïne Chaâbani’s men managed to claim a 2-1 victory in the first-leg, thanks to goals from Amr Marei and Haythem Ayouni.

The result meant that Al Masry need at least a draw in order to clinch a spot in the semi-finals for only the second time in the club’s history.

However, the team had an unfortunate start to the game as Chadrack Lukombe’s effort hit Yasser Hamed’s hand for the referee to award the hosts a penalty.

Youssef El Fahli stepped up and managed to beat Ahmed Masoud from the spot, giving his side an early lead after just seven minutes.

In the 18th minute, the hosts nearly made it two, but Charki El Bahri’s effort rebounded off the post.

RS Berkane kept dominating the game and could have scored at least once more, but they eventually settled for the early goal and sealed the qualification on aggregate scoreline.

After the full-time whistle, Farid Shawky was shown a straight red card for showing unsportsmanlike towards the referee.

Al Masry have now become the second Egyptian team to exit the competition on Sunday after Pyramids, who had lost 2-0 on aggregate to TP Mazembe in the afternoon.

Meanwhile, RS Berkane will now face TP Mazembe in the semi-finals, while Al Ahli Tripoli will be up against Orlando Pirates.
