Arab League (AL) held an emergency meeting to discuss the latest developments in Libya earlier Tuesday, under the chairmanship of Iraq.
This meeting aims at adopting a unified Arab position towards illegal foreign interference in the Libyan issue that threatens its stability and the whole region as well.
The Egyptian delegation was chaired by Ambassador Alaa Roshdy, Egypt’s Permanent Representative to AL.
This meeting cames at the request of Egypt as Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced on Thursday that his country would send troops to Libya to support the Government of National Accord (GNA).
It is worth mentioning that, Turkey and Libya’s GNA signed two separate Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs); one on maritime boundaries in the eastern Mediterranean and another on security and military cooperation.
The maritime and military agreements were condemned by Libyan National Army (LNA) led by Haftar.
Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, France, and Russia support LNA while the GNA is backed by Turkey and Qatar, as well as Italy.
Egypt called upon the international community to face this “negative approach,” which coincides with Germany’s efforts to reach a comprehensive peaceful solution for the conflicting parties of Libya.
Haftar has been leading a military campaign since early April in and around Tripoli, attempting to take over the city and topple the UN-backed government.
