Al-Azhar held a panel at its pavilion during the 57th Cairo International Book Fair on Monday, calling for deeper integration between science and religion to confront contemporary atheism.
Speaking at the session titled “The Integration of Science and Religion,” Dr. Mahmoud Al-Hawari, Assistant Secretary-General for Da‘wa and Religious Media at the Islamic Research Academy, said claims of conflict between science and faith are “illusory,” stressing that science answers “how” the universe works, while religion addresses “why” it exists. True understanding, he said, emerges when scientific explanation aligns with spiritual guidance.
Dr. Amr Sherif, professor of surgery at Ain Shams University and a prominent thinker on atheism, said science serves as a “messenger to faith,” adding that no scientific evidence supports atheism. He emphasized that modern scientific discoveries point to a precise cosmic order, reinforcing belief rather than denying it.
The panel concluded with recommendations to promote balanced scientific and faith-based discourse, particularly among youth.
