Al-Azhar Grand Imam Ahmed Al-Tayeb and U.N. Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed called for global cooperation to ensure artificial intelligence is governed by ethical principles that protect human dignity and serve humanity.
During talks at Al-Azhar headquarters on Sunday, Al-Tayeb welcomed the launch of the United Nations Initiative on Artificial Intelligence and Sustainable Development from Al-Azhar University, describing the institution as a bridge between technological progress and moral values.
The Grand Imam warned that AI developed without ethical safeguards could weaken human creativity, erode fundamental values and place humanity’s future under the control of a limited number of powerful actors.
Mohammed praised Al-Azhar as a key partner in shaping ethical AI governance, saying the initiative will expand to religious and cultural institutions worldwide. She also commended Al-Azhar’s establishment of artificial intelligence faculties, describing them as a model for combining technological innovation with ethical responsibility.
