Al-Azhar Grand Imam Ahmed Al-Tayeb told Montenegro's President Jakov Milatović that Islam is a religion of mercy and coexistence, rejecting claims that it promotes violence.

During talks at Al-Azhar headquarters, Al-Tayeb said extremist groups have distorted Islam for political purposes, adding that they "have harmed Islam more than its enemies ever have."

The Grand Imam announced five fully funded scholarships for Muslim students from Montenegro to study at Al-Azhar, saying graduates would help promote the values of peace and human fraternity.

The meeting also focused on interfaith dialogue and educational cooperation. Milatović praised Al-Azhar's role in promoting peaceful coexistence and described Islam as an integral part of Montenegro's multicultural society. He thanked Al-Tayeb for the scholarships and said they would strengthen educational and cultural ties between the two sides.
