Al-Azhar Grand Imam Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb met Monday with Singaporean President Tharman Shanmugaratnam and First Lady Jane Yumiko Ittogi at Al-Azhar headquarters in Cairo.
Egypt’s Grand Mufti Nazir Mohammed Ayad and senior Al-Azhar officials attended the meeting, which highlighted the institution’s global influence.
Talks focused on expanding educational and religious cooperation between Al-Azhar and Singapore, including scholarships for Singaporean students and imam training programs. The leaders also addressed the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, stressing the need for unified international calls to halt the violence.
President Shanmugaratnam praised Al-Azhar’s role in promoting moderation and interfaith coexistence, while el-Tayeb reaffirmed Al-Azhar’s commitment to supporting students and countering extremist ideologies. Ayad welcomed the visit as a sign of mutual respect and global trust in Egypt’s religious institutions.
