Al-Azhar strongly condemned what it described as an attempt by Israeli authorities to legalize the execution of Palestinian prisoners, calling the move a desperate effort to provide legal cover for ongoing violations.
In a statement, Al-Azhar said the proposed legislation reflects “moral breakdown and brutality,” warning that formalizing capital punishment against detainees would constitute a grave violation of international law and humanitarian norms.
The institution expressed deep concern over what it called the failure of the international legal system to deter such actions, asserting that legal measures cannot legitimize the killing of prisoners.
Al-Azhar urged the international community and human rights organizations to assume their legal and moral responsibilities, act swiftly to halt the measures, and hold those responsible accountable in order to protect innocent lives.
