Al-Ahly SC achieved a 2-1 victory over Wadi Degla to move top of the Egyptian Premier League on Wednesday.

The first half ended goallessly but Al-Ahly managed to score the opener when Mohamed Sherif went one-on-one with Mohamed Abdelmonsef, but the veteran keeper managed to deny him the chance to score; however, the rebound fell to Mahmoud Kahraba, who easily found the back of the net.

Al Ahly easily added the second goal by Mohamed Sherif after an assist from Afsha.

Sherif took his tally to 17 goals on top of the league's scoring chart, two ahead of Ceramica Cleopatra striker Ahmed Rayan.

Degla substitute Ahmed Sherif narrowed the gap in the 67th minute but they could not find an equalizer, with Ahly also having a stoppage-time goal chalked off after a VAR review for a foul in the build-up.

Ahly, who have completed their rescheduled games, moved level on 61 points with perennial Cairo rivals Zamalek. However, the Red Devils have the head-to-head advantage with seven matches remaining.

Degla will face a battle to remain in the top flight as they lie second from bottom on 23 points, four adrift of safety.

The Reds now have 61 points from 27 games, the same as Zamalek, with the final seven games of the season deciding the title winners.

Next, Al Ahly will face 12th-placed Ceramica Cleopatra, while Zamalek will be up Ghazl El-Mahalla, who lie 13th. Both games will take place on August 7.

Meanwhile, Wadi Degla remain in the relegation zone with 23 points, four away from safety.
