Air travel in northern Australia has been severely disrupted as Darwin International Airport remains closed for a second day after destructive winds from Cyclone Fina swept through the regional capital overnight.
Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology reported that Cyclone Fina, classified as a Category 3 system, produced wind gusts reaching 205 kilometers per hour on Sunday. The storm moved away from Darwin after passing over the city late Saturday as an intense tropical cyclone.
Airport authorities confirmed that operations will resume only once full safety checks are completed.
Local emergency services urged residents on Sunday morning to avoid downed power lines scattered across the city, warning that this is not the time for sightseeing.
The state-owned power and water corporation said it has not yet determined how many households are without electricity. Maintenance teams began assessing the damage early Sunday.
According to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, several homes and public infrastructure suffered damage, although no serious injuries have been reported.
