African Union Appoints 3 Special Envoys to Ethiopia

The incumbent African Union Chairman and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa announced, on Saturday, that the union appointed three former presidents as special envoys to Ethiopia in order to mediate between the conflicting parties.

 

Ramaphosa mentioned the names of the three African “distinguished Statespersons”, former President of the Republic of Mozambique Joaquim Chissano, former President of the Republic of Liberia Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, and former President of the Republic of South Africa Kgalema Motlanthe.

He also  expressed his deep desire that “the conflict should be brought to an end through dialogue between the parties.”

Conditions in Ethiopia

“The primary task of the Special Envoys is to engage all sides to the conflict with a view to ending hostilities, creating conditions for an inclusive national dialogue to resolve all issues that led to the conflict, and restoring peace and stability to Ethiopia,” according to a statement issued by the office of the AU Chairperson on Twitter.

The African Union Chair also indicated that the “primary task” that the three envoys shall do is to restore “peace and stability to Ethiopia.”
