Monkeypox, mpox, has been declared a public health emergency in Africa by the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) on Tuesday.
The Africa's top medical organization said that the fast and wide speed of a new strain of mpox raised the organization.
More than 13,700 cases and 450 deaths have been reported in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The virus also spread to other African countries, such as Burundi, the Central African Republic (CAR), Kenya and Rwanda.
Africa CDC Head Jean Kaseya revealed that the disease could spiral out of control if immediate steps were not taken to contain it.
Kaseya said: "This declaration is not merely a formality. It is a clarion call to action. It is a recognition that we can no longer afford to be reactive. We must be proactive and aggressive in our efforts to contain and eliminate this threat."
