Adidas has issued a public apology to an Indigenous community in southern Mexico following accusations of cultural appropriation linked to its Oaxaca Slip-On shoe.

The German sportswear giant faced criticism after unveiling a design inspired by traditional Huarache sandals handmade in Villa Hidalgo Yalalag, Oaxaca. The design, created by American designer Willy Chavarria, was condemned for using cultural heritage without formal consent.

At an event held in the affected community on Thursday, Adidas representative Karen González read out an apology letter. The gathering included music, dance, and traditional attire, with many residents wearing the handmade Huarache sandals that had inspired the disputed product.

González admitted the brand’s misstep, stating that the Oaxaca Slip-On was indeed influenced by designs originating in Villa Hidalgo Yalalag. She said Adidas recognized the situation may have caused distress and offered a public apology.

She further pledged that Adidas would avoid working without the guidance and collaboration of local communities in future and reaffirmed the company’s commitment to working directly with Yalalag.

According to Mexican newspaper La Jornada, González clarified that the product had not yet been marketed.

The Mexican Ministry of Culture and Arts in Oaxaca described the apology as a historic act of recognition for Indigenous peoples in the state.

Mexico has stepped up action in recent years against international companies accused of misusing traditional designs from Latin America without credit or authorization.
