Australian police said they are responding to an ongoing security incident near Bondi Beach, one of Sydney’s most famous landmarks, after reports of gunfire triggered chaos and mass evacuations.
Authorities urged the public to avoid the area and seek shelter, as initial reports and videos showed injured people on the ground and crowds fleeing amid gunshots and police sirens.
Police in New South Wales issued an emergency alert warning that the threat was still active.
Witnesses reported hearing dozens of shots shortly after 6:40 p.m. local time, with hundreds of people running from the beach and surrounding streets.

One local resident told media he saw multiple victims lying on the ground with blood visible.
The office of Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said it was aware of the situation and urged residents and visitors to follow police instructions.

Local media later reported that police shot one suspected gunman and arrested another, though officials have not yet confirmed the number of casualties or the suspects’ identities.
