ACCD, AGFUND Hold “Childhood-Friendly Media” Workshop in Abu Dhabi

The regional workshop titled "Media that Supports Childhood" held on Tuesday, (April 23), in partnership with the Arab Council for Childhood and Development (ACCD), the League of Arab States (LAS), the Arab Gulf Program for Development (AGFUND), and UNICEF, in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

In his address, HRH Prince Abdul Aziz bin Talal bin Abdul Aziz Al-Saud, President of the Arab Council for Childhood and Development and Chairman of the Arab Gulf Program for Development (AGFUND), said that today's workshop comes in response to significant changes in communication and media, encompassing shifts in concept, style, and content.

He emphasized that the workshop is a direct result of the substantial changes occurring in the realm of communication and media, affecting various aspects of life such as culture, education, society, economy, and politics.

The workshop, which is scheduled to run until April 25, 2024, was graced by several distinguished individuals. Notably, Her Majesty Queen Aziza, Secretary of State to the Consort of His Majesty the King of Malaysia, Dr. Hassan Al-Bilawi, Secretary-General of the Arab Council for Childhood and Development, the renowned artist Ahmed Helmy, the talented artist Shaima Saif, and prominent media figures Mona Al-Shazly, Nashwa Al-Ruwaini, and Nadia Al-Zoubi and Mama Anisa were in attendance. Representatives from regional and international organizations, relevant Emirati institutions, as well as experts and media professionals from 7 Arab countries also participated.

The presentation was delivered by Sham Al-Bakour, a Syrian girl who won the Reading Challenge Award.During the first day, which spanned three days, the workshop featured a dialogue session for children. This session was attended by members of the Emirati Children's Parliament and moderated by the artist Shaima Saif. The session focused on the media's influence on environmental and climate awareness among children. The participants emphasized the significance of environmental preservation by drawing upon the practices of our ancestors.

The League of Arab States and the Arab Council for Childhood and Development honored the “Sharjah Child-Friendly Office” in 2022 during the launching ceremony of the “Childhood-Friendly Media” guide under the title “Correcting Misconceptions about Children in the Arab Media,” which was held in the Egyptian capital, Cairo.

The workshop was launched in 2017 to address the issue of child rights by training media professionals and equipping them with the knowledge and skills required to protect and care for the rights of the child in the Media field. Sharjah Media Corporation signed to child-friendly guidelines for media professionals which recommended by League of Arab States.
