Al Ahly's former legend Mohamed Aboutrika said on Monday that Egyptian star Mohamed Salah is not happy at Liverpool and his Anfield future could be in doubt.

The Egyptian forward recently caused a stir by publicly expressing his disappointment with not being named captain for the Reds' Champions League game against Midtjylland, in which he scored their only goal as the most senior player in a heavily-changed side.

Jurgen Klopp instead chose Trent Alexander-Arnold as his captain on the night.

"I called Salah about his situation at Liverpool and he is upset, but that would never affect his performance on the field," Aboutrika told beIN Sports.

"I know that Salah is not happy at Liverpool. He told me the reasons why he is not happy but they are secrets and I cannot talk about it in public. One of the reasons that made Salah angry was that he was not the captain against Midtjylland."

Aboutrika continued to express his belief that Salah's talent would be recognised if he played for one of Spain's top sides.

"If Salah was a player at Real Madrid or Barcelona, and playing at the same level as Liverpool, he would've won the Ballon d'Or," Aboutrika added. "In my opinion, Liverpool are considering to sell Salah for economic purposes."

"I do not have any influence over Salah's decisions, he is my friend and brother, and he is smart enough to know what is best for himself."
