Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit said the world is passing through a phase of deep and far-reaching transformation in the structure of the international system, warning that current global conditions make it increasingly difficult to predict the future amid rapidly unfolding and often unexpected developments.

Aboul Gheit made the remarks on Friday during a high-level discussion on the changing global landscape and its implications for the Arab region. The event was attended by a large gathering of Indian diplomats, journalists, and experts, as well as members of the Arab diplomatic corps in New Delhi, following an invitation from the Indian Council of World Affairs.

According to the Secretary-General’s official spokesperson, Gamal Roshdy, the discussion addressed a range of key issues, foremost among them the long-standing Arab–Indian relationship, alongside regional and international developments and their repercussions for Arab states.

Aboul Gheit noted that the current international climate raises fundamental questions about whether the changes underway represent lasting structural shifts or are merely temporary features of a transitional phase. He stressed that the accelerating pace of events has added to global uncertainty and weakened traditional assumptions about stability in the international system.

Highlighting Arab–Indian relations, Aboul Gheit emphasized their deep historical roots and pointed to significant untapped potential for expanding cooperation, particularly in the fields of energy, digital technology, and services. He underscored that closer collaboration could serve the strategic interests of both sides at a time of growing global economic and geopolitical volatility.

Turning to regional challenges, Aboul Gheit warned that the Arab region continues to face multiple crises that threaten state stability, including the spread of militias and armed groups. He stressed the urgent need for comprehensive political solutions capable of restoring stability while preserving national unity and territorial integrity.

The Secretary-General also addressed the Palestinian issue, condemning Israeli violations in the Gaza Strip. He described the peace plan proposed by the U.S. president and adopted by the UN Security Council under Resolution 2803 as a significant and positive development, noting that it contributed to halting an Israeli military campaign that had lasted for two years. Aboul Gheit called for swift action to implement the commitments of the plan’s second phase.

Reaffirming the Arab League’s long-standing position, he stressed that the two-state solution remains the only just and viable resolution to the Palestinian question. He also expressed appreciation for India’s supportive stance toward Palestinian rights and its respect for international law.

In concluding his remarks, Aboul Gheit reflected on the broader lessons of history, noting that no empire has ever endured indefinitely, a reminder, he suggested, that periods of dominance and decline are inherent features of the global order.
