Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit on Thursday welcomed Somalia’s first direct municipal elections in over five decades, calling them a "significant step" toward reinforcing constitutional legitimacy and civil peace.

In a statement issued by the League’s press office, Aboul Gheit praised the Somali government’s efforts to transition from an indirect electoral system to direct universal suffrage—a "one person, one vote" model not seen in the country since 1969. He urged all Somali political factions to prioritize national consensus and dialogue to address ongoing security threats and terrorism.

Spokesperson Gamal Roshdy confirmed the League is closely monitoring the process in Mogadishu, viewing it as a move to consolidate popular participation. The 22-member organization reaffirmed its readiness to provide technical and political support to help restore stability and strengthen Somalia's state-building efforts.
