Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit welcomed the election of former Iraqi president Barham Salih as the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, voicing confidence in his ability to address mounting global displacement crises.
In a post on the social media platform X, Aboul Gheit described Salih as a “dear friend” and a seasoned Iraqi and Arab statesman, congratulating him on assuming the UN post and wishing him success. He said he was confident Salih would draw on his deep and respected experience to help ease the suffering of refugees worldwide.
Aboul Gheit stressed that the Arab region, which he said is currently among the hardest hit by displacement and humanitarian crises, would particularly benefit from Salih’s leadership at the UN refugee agency.
Salih has held several senior political positions in Iraq and is known internationally for his diplomatic engagement and advocacy on regional and global issues.
