Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, welcomed the announcement of the agreement on the exchange of prisoners, abductees, and detainees in the Republic of Yemen, which was signed in the Jordanian capital, Amman, on the evening of 14 May, providing for the release of 1,750 individuals.
He described the agreement as an important humanitarian step with a significant Arab dimension, contributing to alleviating the suffering of a considerable number of families and opening prospects for a broader exchange deal based on the principle of "all for all." He further considered it a positive model demonstrating that peaceful solutions to the Yemeni crisis remain attainable.
Mr. Aboul Gheit also commended the efforts exerted by the Sultanate of Oman, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, the United Nations Special Envoy for Yemen, and the International Committee of the Red Cross in achieving this important humanitarian agreement.
Gamal Roshdy, the official spokesperson for the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, conveyed the Secretary-General’s emphasis on the importance of ensuring the full implementation of the agreement within the specified timeframe and in accordance with the approved implementation mechanism.
