Aboul Gheit Warns of Social Media Polarization at Arab Information Ministers’ Meeting

Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit on Wednesday urged Arab media institutions to confront rising polarization fueled by social media, calling for credible information and professional standards amid what he described as “unprecedented transformations” in the global media landscape.

Speaking at the opening of the 55th session of the Council of Arab Information Ministers, chaired by Syria, Aboul Gheit said new technologies and shifting audience habits demand flexibility but also heighten the spread of extremist and sensational content. He warned that algorithm-driven platforms often trap users “in closed bubbles,” amplifying division.

Aboul Gheit stressed the role of Arab media in countering extremist ideology, supporting sustainable development goals, and strengthening public trust. He also highlighted the need for more effective global communication on the Palestinian cause, noting the scale of destruction in Gaza and growing international willingness to hear the Palestinian narrative.

He called for intensified efforts to enhance Arab engagement in the digital sphere.
