Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit urged stronger regional coordination on artificial intelligence during the “AI Summit Toward the Future” in Tunis on Tuesday, warning that rapid advances in the technology are outpacing societies’ ability to manage their impact.
Aboul Gheit praised Tunisia and the Arab Organization for Communication and Information Technologies for hosting the event, noting that AI offers “limitless opportunities” for sustainable development but carries significant risks, including job losses, unchecked competition among major powers, and the potential militarization of autonomous systems.
He highlighted recent Arab initiatives, including the Arab AI Strategy, the Arab AI Initiative endorsed in Baghdad, and the Arab Charter of AI Ethics approved by Arab ICT ministers. He said these steps aim to create a unified regional position and responsible use frameworks.
