On Sunday, the Arab League Secretary General, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, voiced his severe alarm over reports regarding the deployment of Syrian nationals as mercenaries in Azerbaijan to participate in the current Nagorno-Karabakh war.

In an interview with TV anchor Ahmed Moussa on his talk show “Ala Masoulity” aired on “Sada ElBalad” TV channel, Aboul Gheit condemned the use of Syrians by Turkey to involve them in the current fighting between Azerbaijan and Armenia.

Situation in Libya

During the talks, the AL chief touched on the situation in Libya, saying that there are many foreign interventions in the country that seek to secure personal interests and undermine the settlement of the Libyan crisis.

“We are following the situation in Libya with great concern, and we hope that the parties will reach a permanent, and comprehensive ceasefire agreement, to reach an inclusive national peace settlement. Everyone knows that there is no military solution in Libya,” he said.

Aboul Gheit added that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is intervening militarily against Egypt, Syria, Iraq and Libya.

He continued, “Even Italy, which understood many of the positions of the Turkish president, went to France, as everyone says to Erdogan, now we will punish you.”

He also hailed Egypt's pivotal role in halting the hostilities between the Libyan warring parties, confirming that the Cairo Declaration initiative was made in favor of the Libyan people to restore peace and stability.

The Secretary-General stated that Egypt pushed the political process in Libya, stressing that it had adopted multiple talks with the United Nations and Morocco in order to settle down differences between the Libyan parties.

The Israeli-Palestinian conflict:

Concerning the Palestinian cause, Aboul Gheit stressed that establishing the Palestinian state is inevitable, urging Palestinians not to give up hope. He called on the Palestinian factions to end pisions and place the country's higher interests above any other consideration.

He stressed that the Arab League has been and will always support the Palestinian cause, expressing amazement at some claims that he is advocating the US peace plan.

He said the Arab League as well as the Palestinian leadership and people are totally against this plan that takes everything from the Palestinians and gave them nothing in return.

"We have responsibilities and obligations towards the Palestinian cause but at the same time we have a responsibility to preserve the pan-Arab body because we are now in a tragic situation," he said.

Aboul Gheit stressed that the Arab countries did not walk away from the Palestinian cause.

He expressed regret over the current stance of the US administration towards the Palestinian issue, saying the current administration turned a blind eye to the international law by recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and giving Israel green light to capture more Palestinian territories.
