Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit urged Mediterranean governments to intensify joint efforts to end regional conflicts, warning that the human toll in Palestine and Sudan has reached “unbearable” levels.
Speaking at the 10th Regional Forum of the Union for the Mediterranean, Aboul Gheit thanked Spain for hosting the event and praised European positions that “stood for humanity and justice” during two years of war in Gaza. He said more than 67,000 Palestinians had been killed and that “a society was almost erased,” adding that continued occupation and restrictions on aid make stability “impossible.”
Aboul Gheit underlined that the UN-backed roadmap for a Palestinian state must remain the central objective, stressing that “a cease-fire is only a step; the goal is a permanent settlement.”
He also called for an urgent humanitarian truce in Sudan and welcomed UN efforts to unify Libya’s institutions and pave the way for elections.
